This site is dedicated in loving memory to Cate Gilles. Every
once in a while, we are joined by someone who shines very brightly
among us. Through her Art, Intellect, shear Willpower, and Love, Cate
did this. She brightened the lives of her family, her friends, her
collegues, and her students. We miss her. |

Cate
Gilles was an inspired artist, remarkable thinker, indefatigable
researcher, and great writer. As described by Dr. Jamison in her book
“An Unquiet Mind”, Cate was most likely suffering from manic
depression. In a moment likely stretched into infinitely unbreakable
pain, Cate took her life August 4th, 2001 early in the morning. She was
outside, in the desert, in a favorite place, and surrounded by the
natural beauty she so loved.
Lets just say, the genetic
connection is strong and there is a familial tendency. Nonetheless,
Cate caught the up side along with the down side, if you’ll pardon the
pun (I think she would appreciate the humor). She caught real genius.
Cate applied her belief in the wonder of life and the importance of
taking care of our fellow beings. She worked hard and long to help
people in day-to-day life, her profession, her studies, and her art.
Fundamental to all that I have learned this past year is that Cate
loved life extremely and consistent with the duality of her condition
–she was terribly burdened by it.
Cate’s unstoppable mind
carried her into so many topics and places, that one year after her
death I am only just beginning to understand a small piece of her way.
Many
people have contacted us, Cate’s family, over the past year to express
deep sorrow at her loss and, almost more so, gratitude at having known
her.
It is hard to comprehend profound impact. But it seems that Cate in her years here on this planet created just that.
In
setting up this web site last year, I only wanted to “do something”.
Now I am gaining speed on a plan. My current course with the web site
is to create links to resources on the following topics: Indigenous
Peoples news & resources; Art; the effects of toxics in the
environment; Casinos-how they operate- who benefits- who looses; and,
Manic Depression and Bipolar information and resources.
I could
use any help you the reader might consider sending my way. If you want
links posted or have relevant information about Cate, her interests, or
something you believe she might want up online-please email it my way.
This
past year has been difficult and I have not been very good at a timely
response to emails. I will attempt to do better going forward.
Thank you all for your support. rg
We want this site to be a resource for people dedicated to Cate's causes- Please contact us if you have anything to contribute.Contact Us
To
everyone who has contacted us and donated to Cate's memorial we (her
community of family and friends) thank you deeply. Many of you have
asked how she died. For now, lets just say she chose to go to a more
peaceful place where she could create her art, watch sun sets and
lightening storms, and dance with the wonders of the universe. |
